where does spirituality end and work begin?   Leave a comment

Paul Stankard, the glass artist I wrote about in American Style, subscribes to the Benedictine motto, to labor is to pray – “a sweet attitude,” he calls it.

It is also a challenging attitude, one that speaks to the relationship between meditation/prayer/spiritual practice and everyday life/work/labor.  Is there a distinction?  Is there a value in making time for meditation or prayer as distinct from everyday activities?  Is the goal to fuse them?  Are certain activities like making art more apt to be done in this attitude?  Does — can? — a work of art express this prayer or meditation?  How?
